“Colby Black From Slave to Cowboy” is a novella about the brief life and violent times of Colby Black as seen through a several months stretch of 1872 when the protagonist is 18 years old. He lives with Old Man Jenkins, who is like a father to him, and Tom, also adopted by Jenkins and becomes like Black’s brother. The early years of the men’s lives are seen through flashbacks. The three former slaves work their farm and also work other jobs Old Man, as he is known, and Tom as carpenters; Black as a deputy. The book includes historical events such as the Civil War, Emancipation of slaves and migration to Oklahoma in search of a better life and “the American dream.” The book includes details about the hardships and difficulties of frontier life and culminates with a classic cowboy shootout.

I love the voices and the rough-riding souls of these sons of the Civil War.Life's verities well up eloquently through the omniscient narrator: "He was always scared that surviving the war had used up all his good luck." And "When you ain't gonna have something, best not to hope for it."
There's a dead-on description of a sod house that'll have you chomping grit in your beans.
Some minor carping: the dry-gulched Western landscape could have been punched up a bit more. For example, Jamie could have said something like, "the sun sulled in the sky like a mule."
That line's lifted from one of my favorites, "Lonesome Dove." In fact, with its conflicted, cross-grained characters, this debut put me in mind of the Larry McMurtry classic (a huge compliment).
And speaking of classics, I thrilled to the "Shane"-like collision of the rich, arrogant, white town baron and Colby,
the black gun jockey. I think the powerful racial themes of this Western morality tale will spur readers to backtrack on the American history they think they know.
